Powering Resilience in the Regions

CVGA has secured a $2.57 million grant to install 11 backup energy systems on council-owned community facilities across 10 municipalities in regional Victoria through the Victorian Government's 100 Neighbourhood Battery Fund.

The 18-month Powering Resilience in the Regions project is a joint initiative led by the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance in partnership with 10 regional councils, the Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance and Gippsland Alliance for Climate Action. It builds on detailed feasibility and business case work undertaken by the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance in partnership with councils to identify suitable locations for 'energy resilience hubs'.

Climate-driven extreme weather events pose an increasing risk to electricity infrastructure in regional Victoria. With flood, bushfire, storm and extreme heat events becoming more frequent, there is a growing need to enhance energy resilience in communities. This project will install behind-the-meter batteries and solar PV systems on public facilities to create 'energy resilience hubs' where community members can access power, water, and communications during extended power outages.

Batteries funded through the Victorian Government's 100 Neighbourhood Batteries Fund are also helping Victoria reach its target of at least 2.6 GW of energy storage by 2030 and 6.3 GW by 2035. CVGA is grateful to the Victorian Government for their support and looks forward to commencing this project in May 2025.

The project is expected to be completed in October 2026.
